PSLE #55 English Oral - Heartwarming Hands: Youth Volunteers in Action
PSLEhacker Episode #55 - 5W1H Focus
Date of News Article: 28 April 2025 Source: Adapted from Community Service & Youth Features
Reading Passage:
In our fast-paced society, it is easy for students to become completely absorbed in their own academic stress and extracurricular activities. Many youths grow up oblivious to the struggles of the less fortunate living right in their own neighborhoods. This is why community service programs, such as school Values in Action (VIA) projects, are an indispensable part of character development.
Volunteering pushes youths to step out of their comfort zones. Whether it is packing grocery rations at a food bank or distributing care packs to elderly residents living in one-room rental flats, these acts of kindness open students’ eyes to the realities of the world. It is highly rewarding to see the bright smiles of the elderly when they realize they have not been forgotten.
Spending a Saturday morning chatting with seniors provides them with a deep sense of reassurance and combats their loneliness. Furthermore, when classmates work together to carry heavy bags of rice or navigate HDB corridors to deliver meals, they naturally forge a strong sense of camaraderie and learn the true meaning of teamwork.
We must encourage the younger generation to be proactive in looking out for the vulnerable. Making the meaningful and wise choice to sacrifice a few hours of weekend playtime to help someone in need builds deep empathy. Ultimately, when youths learn to extend a helping hand, they develop the compassion needed to help our society weather the storm of an aging population, ensuring that Singapore remains a gracious and caring home for all.

PSLE Oral Practice: Stimulus-Based Conversation (5W1H Focus)
Question 1: Visual Analysis (Using basic 5W1H to describe)
“Look at the picture. Describe what the students are doing and how the elderly woman feels.”
Who & Where: Two primary school students are standing at the doorway of an HDB flat with an elderly resident.
What & When: They are handing her a bag of food supplies, likely during a weekend school volunteering project.
Why & How: The elderly woman is smiling warmly, showing that she feels a deep sense of reassurance and gratitude for their visit. The students are being proactive in helping the less fortunate. Making the choice to spend their time volunteering is highly commendable, and working together on this meaningful task helps the students forge a strong sense of camaraderie.
Question 2: Personal Recount (Applying full 5W1H)
“Tell us about a time you helped someone in need or participated in a community service project.” (Note : Think about your school’s VIA activities or helping a neighbor!)
Who & Where: Last semester, my class participated in a Values in Action project at a nearby senior care center.
What & When: We spent a Friday afternoon organizing a simple arts and crafts session for the elderly residents.
Why: It was an invaluable experience because I used to be quite shy around older people and was unsure of what to say to them.
How: I made the meaningful and wise choice to strike up a conversation with an “uncle” while helping him fold origami. He shared fascinating stories about what Singapore was like in the past. It made me realize that volunteering is not just about giving things away; it is about giving our time and respect.
Question 3: Opinion & Experience
“Some people say that youths today are too selfish and only care about their mobile phones. Do you agree?”
Opinion: I disagree with that unfair stereotype. While it is true that youths spend a lot of time on their devices, it does not mean they are oblivious to the needs of others.
Reason: Many youths actually use technology to spread awareness about charitable causes or organize donation drives online. When given the opportunity, teenagers are very capable of showing deep empathy.
Experience (5W1H style): (When/Where) During the recent school holidays, (Who/What) a group of my seniors organized a neighborhood clean-up entirely through a Telegram group chat. (How/Why) They were incredibly proactive in gathering volunteers to pick up litter around the estate. Seeing them sacrifice their free time gave me confidence that my generation can weather the storm of any negative stereotypes. As long as schools continue to guide us, youths will definitely step up to help the community.
Theme: Volunteering / Helping the Elderly / Empathy & Compassion Visual Stimulus: A photo taken along the corridor of an older HDB flat. Two primary school students in their school PE attire are smiling warmly as they hand a reusable grocery bag filled with food supplies to a grateful elderly woman standing at her doorway.
