Reading Passage:
In a bustling metropolis like Singapore, surrounded by concrete and skyscrapers, it is easy to forget that we have a thriving, albeit small, agricultural sector. Tucked away in the Lim Chu Kang countryside, working farms like the Hay Dairies Goat Farm offer a fascinating glimpse into a lifestyle that most city-dwellers rarely experience.
For many youths, food simply comes from a supermarket shelf. They are entirely oblivious to the hard work required to produce the milk they drink or the vegetables they eat. Educational excursions to these farms are therefore indispensable. Watching the morning milking process or hand-feeding alfalfa hay to the goats teaches children valuable lessons about food sustainability and animal care.
Stepping out of the air-conditioned city and breathing in the fresh countryside air provides a deep sense of reassurance and a wonderful escape from academic stress. It reminds us of the simpler things in life. When families make the meaningful and wise choice to spend their weekends supporting local farmers, they do more than just buy fresh produce; they forge a strong sense of camaraderie while learning together.
While the smell of the farm or the muddy paths might initially take some getting used to, it is important to be proactive and embrace the experience. Choosing to weather the storm of a little dirt or a hot afternoon sun builds resilience and ensures that our younger generation stays connected to nature and the origins of their food.

PSLE Oral Practice: Stimulus-Based Conversation (5W1H Focus)
Question 1: Visual Analysis (Using basic 5W1H to describe)
“Look at the picture. Describe what the children are doing and why you think this is a valuable experience.”
Who & Where: A family is spending their day at a local goat farm, standing by a wooden enclosure.
What & When: The children are feeding fresh hay to the goats during a bright morning outing.
Why & How: I think this is a highly valuable experience because the children are making the proactive choice to interact closely with the animals rather than just watching them on a screen. The kids are laughing, which shows they are enjoying the hands-on activity. Being close to nature gives them a deep sense of reassurance and teaches them to care for animals, helping the family forge a strong sense of camaraderie through a shared, fun experience.
Question 2: Personal Recount (Applying full 5W1H)
“Tell us about a time you visited a farm or interacted closely with animals. How was your experience?” Think about feeding the goats, visiting a pet cafe, or even a trip to the zoo!)
Who & Where: During the last school holidays, my parents took my siblings and me to the Hay Dairies Goat Farm in Lim Chu Kang.
What & When: We arrived very early on a Saturday morning specifically so we could watch the milking session before buying hay to feed the goats ourselves.
Why: It was an invaluable experience for me because I had been oblivious to how goat’s milk was actually collected and processed.
How: At first, I was a little scared when the goats rushed to the fence to eat from my hand, as their tongues felt very rough! But I made the meaningful and wise choice to stay calm, and it turned out to be incredibly fun. It gave me a much greater appreciation for the farmers who work there every day.
Question 3: Opinion & Experience
“Some people say that schools should organize more trips to farms instead of just museums. What is your opinion?”
Opinion: I strongly agree with this suggestion. While museums are excellent for learning history, farms provide a completely different type of hands-on education that is just as indispensable.
Reason: In a highly urbanized city like ours, many students have no idea where their food comes from. Visiting a farm teaches us about biology, hard work, and the importance of not wasting food.
Experience (5W1H style): (When/Where) When my class visited a local vegetable farm last year, (Who/What) we were tasked with planting our own seeds in the soil. (How/Why) We had to weather the storm of the hot sun and getting our hands dirty, but it was incredibly rewarding. Being proactive in learning about agriculture outdoors made the science textbook come alive in a way that a quiet museum exhibit simply cannot match.
Theme: Local Farms / Animal Interaction / Food Sustainability Visual Stimulus: A photo taken at a goat farm. Two children are standing near a wooden fence, holding out a bunch of green alfalfa hay to a group of eager goats poking their heads through the railings. The children are laughing, and a parent is standing behind them, smiling.
